As the Moshi Christmas traffic bustled with visitors, we found our way to a rooftop patio to meet the team of talented hearing impaired tailors that created authentic Tanzanian textiles for us. Cocaya, their coordinator, noted that our order kept them busy for weeks and gave them hope that their business will continue to grow.
From yoga bags to aprons, the goods will be sold at a fundraiser in Ottawa, Canada in mid January and the proceeds will go to provide orphans with school uniforms. The purchase of these textiles generated revenue for this group and the profit from these goods will go back into the community and benefit kids.
As I announced our plan to give back to the Moshi community and Cocaya signed the news to the group their faces gleamed with joy. The sense that we were able to provide a small group of entrepreneurs with hope and through grass roots projects will create opportunities within the community was the ideal start to the holidays.
